The Cisco Certified Internetwork Engineer designation is the highest Cisco certification you can achieve. It requires passing both a written exam as well as a proctored lab. Cisco considers this its “master level” certification. Currently, about 10,800 individuals worldwide have earned the title of CCIE, 95 percent of those specializing in Routing and Switching. The next most popular CCIE is Security, with five percent, according to our results.

  • Average amount of monetary bonus expected this year, as reported by the 73 percent of CCIE respondents who said they will probably receive a bonus: $17,109

  • Salaries decreased for 8 percent of respondents by an average of $11,666.

  • Salaries increased for 57 percent of respondents by an average of $9,480.

  • 35 percent of respondents reported no change in salary in the last 12 months.

  • The average CCIE has been certified for 3.6 years. He or she has an average of 9.4 years of experience in networking and/or internetworking.

    The most common job titles held by CCIEs include these:
    Network (support) engineer 29.7%
    Network architect/design consultant 21.6%
    Consulting systems engineer 10.8%
    Senior network engineer 8.1%

    Aside from the Cisco title, here are the typical top credentials CCIEs also hold:

    MCP (All others) 32%
    MCP (Windows 2000) 22%
