Yes, standard UTP cable with RJ-45 on both ends will work fine.

Router-Patch panel : Stright -through
Patch panel-Face Plate: Stight -through
Face Plate-Laptop: Roll over (RJ45-RJ45)
Laptop-serial: DB9 to RJ45

I've never had to make this DB-9 connector before but here is a link for the pinout. DB-9 to RJ-45 Pinout

[My main concern is, Face plate to Laptop only...Which is bolded.

The cable between face plate to Laptop is a Roll over cable (RJ45-RJ45 Roll over Pin out),the rest all the way to the router is stright though....) will it work as console cable? Can I configure the router through this...?

Very very sorry to ask the same question again and again...Because its a huge labs...!

It’s fine, a setup like this can be very tricky to plan right. If you use a roll over cord in between the PC/Laptop and the faceplate it will work just fine. The pin out put is simple side a is pins 1 thru 8, and side b is just a reverse of side a.

Side A
Pin 1 = White/blue
Pin 2 = Blue
Pin 3 = White/Orange
Pin 4 = Orange
Pin 5 = White/Green
Pin 6 = Green
Pin 7 = White/Brown
Pin 8 = Brown

Side B
Pin 1 = Brown
Pin 2 = White/Brown
Pin 3 = Green
Pin 4 = White/Green
Pin 5 = Orange
Pin 6 = White/Orange
Pin 7 = Blue
Pin 8 = White/blue

With this cable and the DB-9 to RJ-45 connector in place, it doesn’t matter where the equipment is. You will be able to configure just about any device out there, except the older switches and routers. When I took my CCNA class I made a cable similar to this and ran it along the wall so I wouldn’t be crammed up in the front row by the equipment.

You can't connect it to an Ethernet port... you have to connect it to a serial port.

When I say connector I am talking about the grey adapter that cisco used to send out with all of their equipment. With out that small peice, none of what we have posted will work.

Not to confuse you. But the only other method would be to use the light blue console cable that has a RJ-45 on one end and a DB-9 on the other. All made into one cable. Which takes place of serial connector and roll over cable. Which would then elminates the need for worrying about were a roll over cable will be needed.

Yes...this is the confusion I was having... now its clear. I thought that the roll over cable which has RJ45 on both end can connect directly to ethernet port to get a console.

Yes... I got it now! So finally I will lay the cable by the following method:

Original Light blue Console Cable (Laptop Serial port-Face Plate Key stone)
Stright through cable ( Face Plate Key stone-Patch panel)
Stright through patch cable (Patch panel-Router)

Hope I am doing in right way! Is it easy find a ready made light blue console cable in the market? If yes... how much per piece approximately?

And once again...thank you very much Mr.Micheal and Mr.Regeth. I appreciate your helps! Its really helps me lot!

The adapter that they are refering is the cisco 74-0495-01
this is what you use when you are going to use rj-45 to rj-45 rollover canle

Just a quick update to this thread...

I messed around with several different pinout configurations for a couple days and finally found one that works.

From PC to wall: Cisco serial cable
From wall to panel: straight T568B wiring
From panel to device: Rollover/straight coupler/Rollover
The rollover cables are standard, according to cisco, 1-8 on one side, reversed to 8-1 on the other. So for this to work, I required two of them and a $2 CAT5 coupler.

The last bit of this is confusing, but it's the only way I was able to access any of my equipment in this manner.
