just failed linux+ and was very dispointed because the transcender software i got was only asking general questions about linux, the actual exam was asking lots of questions on commands. maybe that will teach me to have some experience instead.

Unfortunately, certification without experience isn't very useful.

Practice exam software points out if you're ready for the exam, and where you need to study more. Truly excellent practice exam software will provide high-quality explanations that will explain why the right answers are right and the wrong answers are wrong. Read through ALL of the explanations... even for the questions you answer correctly. There's usually a lot of good information there that you need to know for the exam.

Best of luck on your next attempt!

I'm currently attending a two year college, and I'm currently taking a Linux class. At the end of the semester my instructor said if we took the Linux+ exam we would be exempt from the final for the class. Now my question is this - even though I don't have any work related experience with Linux, would it be a good idea to take this cert? I checked the recommended experience level for this cert on Comptia's site and they only seem to recommend having the A+ and Network+ before you take the Linux+ exam.

Yes, by all means take the exam since you know the material. Experience is good, but knowing the material is what's necessary to earn the certification.

Good Luck!

Linux+ is an entry-level Linux certification. I guess the professor is suggesting the course materials (lab included?) are adequate for the industry cert. Since the cert exam trumps the course exam, I’d go with that.

However, I’d get additional study material on the Linux+ to make sure you weren’t wasting time and money. No point of attempting the exam if you’re not going to prepare.

Good Luck...
