Thank you very much for all your help. Back when I asked the question I didn't really have a clue of what I was talking about, few months later I'm ready to pass the exam.

If somebody thinking about setting up a home lab is reading it and is wondering about the cost, here's the setup I bought (mostly Ebay plus one kind soul I met online)

- Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch 24 ports(79$ - inlcuded console cable, rack mounts and power cable )
- 3x Cisco 2620XM Routers (12.2 IOS) (I got lucky here, got them for shipping cost, usually they are ~50$ each on Ebay)
- 12 unit rack (30$, not necessary, but nice)
- 4xWIC-1T Serial cards (used to connect routers to each other, ~25$ each on Ebay. Four of them is enough, I'll get two more later)
- Cables (DCE/DTE Serial cablesx2, patch cables and power cables, total ~30$)

Cost me about 200$. Now I'm trying layer 3 switch to help me with CCNP studies after I'm done with CCNA.

Hope this helps,

Good Luck

You'll probably be looking at 3550's for layer 3 switches. You can pick them up on ebay for around 150-300 each. The current 3560's are generally $600+. The biggest difference is the 3560 will do some QoS stuff the 3550 can't. Just make sure you are using the EMI image to get the Layer 3 features.
